Applications

The spectroscopic analysis of complex liquids has widespread applications in the food and beverage industry, the chemical industry, the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare and defence. Most techniques for liquid analysis in industry are invasive, ultimately relying on gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS), which is accurate but requires sending an open sample to a lab. VeriVin’s technology allows for a screening tool which is not only simple and rapid, but is also non-destructive and can be used in-situ, without the need to extract a sample and send it to a lab.

Overview

The spectroscopic analysis of complex liquids has widespread applications in the food and beverage industry, the chemical industry, the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare and defence. The last few years have seen an increasing demand for in-situ, rapid and cost-effective authentication and quality control in these fields, with a premium placed on highly sensitive, accurate and, if possible, non-invasive through-container detection techniques…

Olive Oil

Adulteration of Olive oil is unfortunately very common. For example, soybean and hazelnut oils are often used to increase the volume of expensive Extra Virgin Olive Oils. This creates a huge market for illegal organization. Raman spectroscopy is able to detect many of these frauds…

Wine

The EU commission estimates that the economic damage to Europe due to counterfeit wine totals 2.7 billion euros per year, with 218 million euros of damage to the UK alone. By several accounts, the percentage of counterfeit fine wine worldwide is as high at 25%, and it is estimated that the global wine counterfeiting industry may be worth up to 3.1 trillion dollars by 2022. VeriVin aims to build the largest wine database in the world and be able to track bottles along all the supply chain… Read More

Whisky and Spirits

Spirits, and in particular whisky, constitute one of the UK’s largest exports, worth above 4.5 billion pounds. It has been estimated that up to 1/3 of rare Scotch whiskies on the market are fake, and that there may be as much as 41 million pounds of rare whisky on the secondary market and in private collections that is counterfeit. At VeriVin we aim to analyse and fingerprint thousands of bottles of fine whisky…

Honey

Raman spectroscopy can uncover most frauds in honey adulteration: the presence of corn, beetroot and cane syrups has been detected through Raman spectroscopy supported by chemometrics. At VeriVin we have demonstrated that we can discriminate between Manuka Honey, clear honey and glucose adulterated honey using our device…
